[squid-users] failed to find or read error text file

I am stuck.

my freshly built squid does not start.

/var/log/messages says:
"(squid): failed to find or read error text file."
"squid[1234]: Squid Parent: child process 1246 exited with status 1"
"squid[1234]: Exiting due to repeated, frequent failures"

i configured squid with --prefix=/opt/squid, so my error text files
are located in /opt/squid/etc/errors

file permissions on my error text files are set to:
644 for owner root.squid

 /opt/squid/etc/squid.conf is set to
cache_effective_user squid
cache_effective_group squid

I added user and group squid and checked this
 /etc/group shows:
squid:x:103:
 /etc/passwd shows:
squid:x:105:103:Squid Cache:/opt/squid/cache:/bin/false

What did I miss?
Or did I ride the completely wrong horse?

Thank you in advance
benno
