Re: [squid-users] market penetration

In talking to a friend that works at a proprietary competitor of ours
(they sell Volera based caching proxies), he said that in private
research they had funded of the web caching market, Squid had at least
80% of the caching proxy market in Europe, and about 70% in the US. I
don't have the actual results of that study, or know what the
methodology was.

Take it with a grain of salt, if you like, but I consider it to be at
least as true as statistics can be.

Being a small privately funded open-source based company, Swell can't
afford research studies of our competitors like that. ;-) However, I
do have my own research data gathered from our search engine advertising
campaigns (the real benefit of advertising on search engines is the data
you can glean about your competitors! ;-), that indicate that the
numbers he gave are pretty well reflected in the number of searches on
several of the major engines. Though Cacheflow seems to have a
disproportionately large number of searches for the number of
installations based on the numbers from the study. So either people
search on Cacheflow a lot, but end up buying from competitors (because
Cacheflow is the most expensive cache on the market) or the study didn't
count a lot of Cacheflow installations. But, even if Cacheflow
installations can be judged by the number of searches Squid has at least
five times the market penetration (probably a lot more, because we don't
advertise on the keyword 'squid', as it would cost too much without
being sure of whether they're looking for cephalopods or caching
proxies--the keyword 'squid' is estimated to receive ~135,000 searches
per month at Google).

Hope this helps.
