Hi,

Why are you so determined to make your life difficult? You can do any
number of things in DNS and with squid that don't require recompiling
anything.

You can

a) make your DNS authoritative for foobar.com and put CNAME records in for
   qa-*, but put them in the foobar file, NOT the hairball file.

b) make your DNS authoritative for foobar.com and put in A records for
   qa-*.foobar.com with the IP = the address you want.

c) follow Robert's (?) idea of an accelarator

d) use an redirector as I previously described

You don't have to recompile anything. You don't have to violate RFC's.
It's really too easy.
