Is your server using transparent proxy with ipchains?

What version of Linux?

We had a problem that was similar. We were using Redhat 7.1, IPChains was
used to translate port 80 to 8080 on the proxy and the server would do
exactly the same thing. We found the if you us IPTables instead of IPChains
it fixed the probelm.

Not sure if this will help but good luck.

Cheers,
