so let's say I had 6 drives avaiable to use. Should I do something like
20GB / 6 = 3.33GB per hard drive as cache space? Or maybe like an even
3gb
per hard drive? What a waste of 18GB drives with 3GB of space on them.
With that config should I keep my cache_mem at 32?

I suggest setting cache_mem pretty low, say 32 MB.

Use one cache_dir for each hard drive. There is probably no reason to
have more than one dir per drive.

With 512 MB RAM make sure you don't give Squid more than about
20GB of space for caching or you'll run out of memory for the index.
