Hi,

This mail is for the benefit of novice squid users.. (like myself)

First, allow me to covey my sincere thanks to all who replied.

This problem was actually two folds.
1) Basic authentication was active on my webserver.
   Resolution:
webserver should include as part of it's header "Cache-Control:
public" tag.

2) Missing tags in the header.
   Resolution:
The header must have the "Last-Modified" tag

Subject: http request not caching Please Help..!!!

Hi all,

Why is squid not caching http request? I always get TCP_MISS..!!!

I installed squid v2.2 STABLE 4 as per "Deploying Squid Part 1" by Jeff
Dean that was published on
The O'Reilly Network

http://linux.oreillynet.com/pub/a/linux/2000/02/07/tutorial.html

The only changes I did to the default configuration was:

http_port 6000
cache_dir /usr/local/squid/cache 100 16 256
cache_access_log /usr/local/squid/logs/access.log
cache_log /usr/local/squid/logs/cache.log
cache_store_log /usr/local/squid/logs/store.log
cache_swap_log /usr/local/squid/logs/swap.log

I changed http_access deny all TO http_access allow all.
I know this is high risk. But in my case I am using a local network and it
is in a test environment.

My URL http://panther.aus.hp.com/soar.tar generates the following in the
squid access.log

1015286365.529 1 15.73.168.201 TCP_MISS/401 743 GET
http://panther.aus.hp.com/soar.tar - DIRECT/panther.aus.hp.com text/html
1015286377.137 5672 15.73.168.201 TCP_MISS/200 2171213 GET
http://panther.aus.hp.com/soar.tar - DIRECT/panther.aus.hp.com
application/x-tar

This is the header information from panther

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 23:50:17 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.9 (Unix) PHP/3.0.12
Last-Modified: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 23:22:29 GMT
ETag: "22efdf-212000-3c8401b5"
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 2170880
Connection: close
Content-Type: application/x-tar

I have been at this for 7 days with no end in sight. Any help or pointers
will be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Lakshman
