That's it !

While debugging and searching for a wrong configuration, we set the
debug_option to ALL,9.
The side effect, that this option also causes a stronger logging in the
cache.log file was not
evident.

But now the problem is completly solved.

That is very fast growth. Certainly not normal. What's in the cache log? Do

$ tail -f cache.log

and watch what is going through in real time.

My /guess/ is that you have high debugging switched on.
