I`'m not running a caching nameserver. When I deactivate using the proxy in my browser everything works. When I clear and rebuild the cache it works much better so I think the squid configuration is the problem. I'll try bind. Thanks for help.

  Rollolo,

Are you running a caching nameserver on your box ?

If not, it could be that your downstream DNS server is a bit slow or flaky. I am running bind 9.1.3 as a caching nameserver, pointed at my ISP with "Lookup directly if no response from forwarder" enabled (via Webmin). I only get this error if the site is down or no DNS record can be retrieved. See the DNS howto for further details. Setting up a caching DNS is pretty straightforward.

Are you behind a firewall ?

Ports 53 (and 49 depending on your config) need to be open to receive DNS responses. Check your firewall config.

I'd also check out your dns configuration with dig to see what sort of respone times you are getting on DNS lookups.

Squid performs a DNS integrity check on startup, so I don't think this is an obvious Squid issue. Try turning Squid off, and if the problem goes away, it could be Squid problem, but I wouldn't like to say what :-)

  Hope this helps,

  Rob Somerville
