RE: [squid-users] Error starting Squid

This is just a slightly educated guess...

It looks like you may need to do some changes in your squid.conf in the
areas of where your cache is located on a hard disk. Put it someplace
with plenty of room. In my case, I have a separate hard drive installed
and mounted purely as /mnt/proxy. In the squid.conf, I have the logs and
cache both directed to this hard drive, in separate directories of
course.

You may also need to generate the cache structure by running "squid -z".
I haven't run squid without creating the cache first, so I am unsure if
that is the error message that you would receive.

        Well, hopefully that helps.

I also found some excellent instructional material available on the
O'Reilly website. Check out that site and search for papers on setting up
squid. There is an excellent piece that covers everything from compiling
squid to getting it working, although without covering user
authentication very clearly. The piece I found does cover all the
sections that you need to alter in the squid.conf file to get squid to
run.
