Probably Squid gets confused by something in your configuration.

Do you have any cache_peer lines in your squid.conf? If so, what do
they look like? Is it possible that any of them have the HTTP port
set to 0?

If not, a stack trace of the error would help tremendeously in telling
what the cause is..
