which configure command should I use? I have both of them in the
autoconf-2.54 and automake-1.7.

read the INSTALL file. check for the "--prefix" flag. There it is
installed. For instance:
if you write,./configure --prefix=/usr/local/squid executable is sbin,
bin directory

Version 2.5STABLE1
               /usr/local/squid/sbin <------- here is squid
