i can safely say that the latest version of SuSE
Linux, which is 8.1, ships with Squid 2.4-STABLE7..
and it works like a charm...

i haven't tried porting any Squid versions out of the
SuSE distribution, as Squid is a complicated package,
but i think u shouldn't have any problems building
Squid from the source tar ball on SuSE 8.1...
