Re: [squid-users] benefits of WCCP ?

WCCP is an automatic mechanism whereby caches can ask routers to
transparently send port 80 traffic to the cache server (which must
support WCCP in it's TCP/IP stack and in the cache appliation, i.e.
Squid).

It includes automatic failover and load balancing, allowing the router
to automatically bypass the cache server in case of failure and a
simple load balancing method to distribute the load on multiple cache
servers based on the destination IP address.

Using WCCP is a very good alternative to using route maps / policies
in your router for transparent interception of port 80.

If your single proxy server is running on your router then there is
absolutely no use for WCCP.

WCCP is only usedful when doing transparent interception of port 80
and where the proxy is running separate from the router, not for
normal proxies.

So in case 1 you have no use of WCCP.

In case 2 you might have use of WCCP if you are doing transparent
interception of port 80.

Henrik
