[squid-users] question to cache/swap.state

hi, i have already gone through the archives, but did not understand this
topic completely.
my questions:

what is stored in the L2-directories?
(as far as i understood - a binary file containing meta data (md5 checksum,
...) and the complete http-response. is this right???)
what is swap.state used for? does it only contain something like a pointer
to the disk files???
what does happen, if swap.state is deleted? are then all disk files deleted
by squid, too?

thx in advance for any explanations.
