 I am not familiar, with Slackware, but I googalized myself
 on this error string.
 Seems that it could be related to MTU and or ip fragmenting and stuff
 like stat.

 I can only say that low level issues in the network stack must be
solved,
 and in the worst case can influence an application's behavior (Squid),
as
 it seems to be the case here.
