Run it under a debugger and analyse the problem.

However, I *really* recommend upgrading.
Squid 2.4S6 is the *minimum* version of squid free of known security
bugs.

Squid 2.5StableX is the minimum actively gratis supported and bugfixed
version.

Squid 3.0 is about to begin the prerelease cycle.
