Squid is NOT a SOCKS proxy. Squid is a HTTP proxy.

There are numerous good SOCKS proxies to select from available both
free on the Internet and commercially. Dante is one example of a good
free SOCKS server, and you can easily combine this with Squid on the
same machine to provide both proxy services.
