[squid-users] Messenger 5 via Squid Login Issues

Hi All,
I am currently having some fun and games with squid proxy involving msn
messenger 5.0.

I work for an educational institution and our students are currently
screaming blue murder that they cant connect to messenger whislt in the
computing labs, due to firewalling policy we have in place they cannot
make direct connections.

The solution therefore is to use the HTTP proxy option within messenger,
however version 5 of the client seems to be buggy and not receiving
appropriate return data from the cache when it tries to send a POST
connection to gateway.messenger.hotmail.com.

The access log shows the following connection outbound
1058433606.547 392 131.181.124.137 TCP_MISS/200 287 POST
http://gateway.messenger.hotmail.com/gateway/gateway.dll? -
DIRECT/207.46.104.20 application/x-msn-messenger

I know once this has completed the client should then try to create a
CONNECT to login.passport.net using SSL.

I have researched very far and wide on this issue and can't seem to find
any solution so I am trying here as a last resort, if you have come
across this before and know of a fix I would much appreicate you letting
me in on the secret as I have no more ideas for a solution, I would
really appreciate any help the community is able to offer.

One thing I have proven is that if the original request is allowed to go
out on port 1863 (the initial POST state) data after this point on
CONNECT and GET requests flows through squid correctly.

Squid version in use is 2.5-Stable2, no other connectivity issues at
all.

Cheers,
Bradley
