What prefix did you give to samba configure? If none then Samba will be
installed in /usr/local/

Yes.

> --enable-basic-auth-helpers="winbind"
> --enable-ntlm-auth-helpers="winbind"

These depends on the Samba version you are using, and should not be used
if you are using Samba-3.X.
