Subject: [squid-users] Resolving local addresses

===8<==============Original message text===============
I've only recently become a member of [squid-users] so bare with me.

We are using an old version of Squid, version 2.2 on SuSe 7.1 We are working on an
upgrade to Suse 8.2 with Squid 2.5 stable1.

On our old squid if we browse to a local server with the short name (intranet) the
proxy would resolve intranet with use of it's default domain (.north.mycomp.nl) then it
would forward the request to the intranet server with the original short name.

With the new Squid is see that the resolve still works with the default domain but then
the request forwarded is suddenly not just to the short name but to the short name
with the default domain. (intranet.north.mycomp.nl)

I've been looking for a solution for a while but this seems to be the default behaviour
of squid in or after version 2.3 if i read the manuals correctly.

I've found the def_names option but that requires a rebuild of squid, i've found the
posibility of redirect software.

I think redirects are good but there is an exception: we only have one intranet so al
redirects should go there but we are a school and have three server for an app called
"BIT" and we want to redirect to the closest. we do that through aliases in the DNS.
but that would mean we have to take up all our 11 locations in the alias list of the
website on these servers.

what can i configure to get the old method back or was that method concidered a bug
and is it no longer possible?
