Unless you in "when I start Squid" also include "when I install the
iptables rules" then something is seriously wrong.

Just starting Squid without modifying Firewalling should have no impact
what so ever on Internet connectivity, other than that with Squid running
you will be able to use the proxy.

But it you in the sentence include adding the iptables rules for
interception caching then the error is likely to be found there.

Please describe your setup in a little more detail.
