I'm not sure to understand correctly:

With 2.4 you get the authentication pop-up, but you don't have a
username/password to try ?

If so, this is correct, but even using a good username/password, you will
get ALWAYS another authentication pop-up in a never ending loop.

The 2.5 changes was made for avoid this problem.
