of course, the assumption was that this particular
user was running a Squid (or any other app for that
matter) version installed from the installation
CD-ROMs...

in case he compiled it (or any other package) from
source, then he would either have to write his own
start/stop script or use one if it's supplied with the
package for his version of Linux/UNIX...
