Our network has 5000 users. It ran completely fine on a single Compaq
DL360 (Pentium III, 1 GHz) with 512 MB RAM and a 32 GB RAID system.
It was fast as hell. The system load was at about 0.5 at peak times.
We used RADIUS authentication and ACL with about 200-300 acl entries.

IMHO Squid costs hardly any serious resources. However if you start to
look at the content (with other software) you'll need lots of CPU power.

We have switched to dual Xeon servers but just because we run other
content filters on the same proxy. Should not be necessary on your
system.
