How is the connection aborted, by a FIN or by a RST?

If a FIN then see the half_closed_clients directive.

If RST then your OS TCP/IP stack did not buy the RST indication, probably
the RST was not generated proper by the other side and it also doesn't
react proper to the retransmission attemtps (the other end should send
additional RST packets for each retransmitted packet, not ignore the
traffic).
