You are using very old version of squid first. Get
source from
http://www.squid-cache.org/Versions/v2/2.5/ for Stable
10. Install with your exising squid configuration
options. Use the squid.conf with new squid version.
Start it with non-transparent mode proxying.
What are you getting cache.log file? Post those
entries.
