When the browser is configured, specifically, to use a proxy server;
it transmits the request directly to the proxy. If it isn't, it must
perform DNS queries to determine where to send the HTTP request.
An intercept (transparent) proxy does nothing more than intercept the
HTTP request. To get this to work you will need to get DNS to work
on all internal systems before you can intercept their requests.
As an aside, should you switch to an intercept proxy; you will no
longer process all of the users' HTTP requests. Given the current
business interest in HIPPE and Sarbannes-Oxley; your current
configuration is a better solution for addressing these issues. I
would, however, recommend fixing your DNS problems.
