 - You have a typical Redhat RPM based install; the disadvantage that they
come with all configure options enabled; this can lead to effective
unwanted complexity when dealing with problems, such as you are
experiencing.

I advise to make your own BUILD and install of Squid; at the configure-stage,
use only those options which you need.
While you are at it; take the opportunity to fetch the latest STABLE release
before starting.
