Disable hyperthreading and run a UP kernel and you might get even better
performance for Squid.

hyperthreading halves your CPU cache size, and running a SMP kernel adds
a notice amount of system overhead..

But if your server runs other tasks than Squid then hyperthreading may
help providing a bit more CPU power when there is multiple tasks
competing for CPU cycles.
