If you are really running 2.5.STABLE3 from RedHat (and you haven't
recompiled using the SRPM), that would likely be your problem. Squid
has to be compiled in an increased-filedescriptor environment. To the
best of my knowledge, RedHat's RPM is not compiled in such an environment.
