I'd add two things to this list. Run a squid -v before compiling the
new version. Last I saw, RedHat put the files related to Squid in
non-default locations. For simplicity sake of migration, it might be a
good idea to match that.

The second would be to peruse the 2.6 release notes
(http://www.squid-cache.org/Versions/v2/2.6/RELEASENOTES.html) and note
any changes needed to your squid.conf.
