Having a squid running on FreeBSD, I use the following compile option :
--enable-dl-malloc --enable-time-hack --disable-select --disable-poll --enable-kqueue
For caching, I believe it's a good idea to enable diskd.

I'm also interested in sharing various optimization tips for Squid on FreeBSD ;-)
