Squid is a HTTP proxy and only supports HTTP clients.

Squid supports HTTP clients asking for http://, ftp://, gohper:// and
wais:// URLs, and also the CONNECT method for establishing SSL tunnels.

The CONNECT HTTP method is also abused by lots of other software for
tunneling other stuff via HTTP proxies. FTP, IRC, some peer-to-peer file
sharing software, etc... etc..
