Along Amos questions, are you using CacheFu or something? Is it
generating right HTTP Headers to tell Squid to cache, mostly static,
objects?

Are you using Apache just for url rewrite? If so why don't use just
Squid with a url rewrite program (although I really don't think
Apache is the issue) ?
