The clients are explicitly configured to use the proxy...

It's very weird and so far I haven't found anything else to solve the mystery.

The customer told me their ISP replaced a bad 'something' (a fibre/ethernet
converter maybe) just a couple of days before the problems appeared (or got
noticed) and I asked them to check with their ISP, but -as usual- 'it's all OK
on their part'.
