if you're running Linux and ext3, make sure that you have the
dir_index filesystem feature on, if possible at all just have the
journal on a different physical disk, and you're mounting with options
noatime, nodiratime, data=writeback.
Reiserfs is also good, as xfs might be worth a shot.
