Squid fetches and sends websites to web browsers.

Thunderbird sends and receives emails.

Your email access is broken or denied by the network admin.

Two things as different as sky and ground.

Just to be confusing:
   Some emails contain websites. Thunderbird is able to fetch the
_images_ on these website emails from Squid. Thunderbird needs to
receive the email on its own before this can happen.

When email is broken Thunderbird cannot do its work. This has nothing to
do with Squid.
