Squid-2.7 can periodically monitor it's peers by querying a defined URL
and automatically declare the peer as dead unless the response is within
expected size (by configuration).

This has not yet been ported to Squid-3.

Note that this is just monitoring. It does not detect this per request.
But at least takes the malfunctioning server out of rotation after a
short while. So some clients MAY still get the bad response until Squid
detects that the server has gone bad. It also does not work if the error
on the server is transient and only happens sometimes.
