Well, in reply to my own message...

Somebody just pointed me to a setting in Internet Explorer called "Use
HTTP 1.1 through proxy connection". It's under Internet Options >
Advanced, about half way down the list of option under HTTP 1.1
settings section.

That fixed the problem for me and my users.

I'll still be upgrading to a newer version, but now I can take the
time to plan it properly.
