I suspect you have hit one of the problems related with >2GB objects
being stored in the cache. Maye a genuinely large object or a corrupt
file size from the crash.

As a workaround clearing the cache should remove the object(s) which are
leading to the rebuild issues.

For the long term fix are you able to upgrade to squid-3.1.10 or later?
I have a PPA with 3.1 backport packages. They work for Ubuntu 9.04+.
Recent 3.1 may not build on Hardy due to dependencies.
