I don't know if it is a feature or not but recent versions of IE will
either display a blank page or tell you the connection is broken if you
try to redirect https or give it a http response.

In the past I had success returning the 418 status code (Yes, I know what
it means...) and have a host called 418 that served a static https page.
IE would visit the page but would whine about certificates not matching,
which it should.
