Unusually high POST delays

Using squid-1.2.beta20 or beta21 and 'sending an email message' oo one of
the many www/email sites about the place results in unusually high delays in
sending the message - almost always over 120 seconds.

This only seem to affect the sendmail cgi program or whatever it is they
use, logins and everythnig else are fine.

This has been tested with excitemail.com and usa.net, but I'm told the same
holds with yahoo and a few others.

A tcpdump shows :-

   tcp connection is opened
   POST data is sent
    ... wait for 120 or more seconds ....
   response comes back

Has anyone else seen this? Its not necessarily a squid bug, in fact it looks
very much like it their end - only this doesn't happen if the browser goes
direct.

Typical log entries are:
