Sounds pretty reasonable.

All linux-2.2.x platforms can be expected to have a working kernel
implementation of poll, where as only some 2.1.x have it and no 2.0.x
kernels have it.

I'll test poll(2) on my alpha tomorrow if I remember (just made a
note to do so now) and see if I can see what is going on.
