The Debian squid package is compiled with both ufs and aufs,
and is in use by many people. It defaults to ufs, so on Linux with
glibc 2.2 running ufs with a binary compiled for both ufs and aufs
at least the ufs part is stable. I haven't really beaten on aufs
yet, perhaps I should switch our main cache to aufs for a few hours
to see how it holds up.

Okay I made an internal note to drop the unlinkd patch from the
debian squid package when this happens.
