I'd be careful - this severely limits what we're able to do
with the store interface when it comes time to rework it.
it will almost certainly breaks COSS or any cyclic-style filesystem.

Its a nice idea, but i'd like to cut back on the intrustive
features until some intrusive tidyups have happened.
