Amos: this is EXACTLY what happened on MSYS+MinGW when I had
"discovered" the autoconf problem in the SQUID3-IPV6 branch.

And please note: I'm able to build fine Squid3 on Solaris 10 x86
(AMD64 CPU) using gcc.
