This isn't exactly a fix though is it?

More of a scalability enhancement.
Can I change the commit title to
"Add general sub-configure for negotiate_helpers" when porting it to 3.1?

On the side:
  I'd like to get a custom macro which does all this looping and detection
for helpers in the general case. That should cut out quite a few dozen
lines from configure.in.
