Squid DNS lag

I have had several users complain about "squid lag" over the past few
weeks... What happens is that upon going to a site -- especially one that
is NOT in the cache -- there is a lot of lag, typically 30+ seconds,
sometimes more, and sometimes it never gets there. After a site starts
loading everything is fast as I would expect, with Squid pegging the line.
I havn't been able to track the problem to any specific thing, but I do
think it has something to do with name lookups. I have four parents
configured, but I don't think that any of them are the problems. Any
ideas? Also, is there a way to force Squid to do DNS lookups through the
UNIX system's DNS instead of going up the hierarchy for them?
I'm running Squid 1.1.15
