I had a similar setup at one stage and made the following system changes:

in file /etc/rc.local:
 sysctl -w kern.maxfilesperproc=4096
 sysctl -w kern.maxfiles=4096

This overcame my "better increase maxfiles" warning from Squid.
I've also recompiled the kernel a number of times with varying degrees of
