Why the emphasis on using gcc?

I know the configuration script warns that anything else may not work, but
I've used Sun's C compiler (on SPARC 10, SPARC 20, and Ultra, with Solaris
2.4, 2.5, and 2.5.1/2.6 respectively) and not encountered any oddities
attributable to the compiler. I can't say if that would hold for Solaris
x86, which was the original topic, though.
